Lady Shockers Shine at Season Opener

WICHITA, Kan. – The Women’s selected team dominated the final match of this season’s opening event to claim the UNOH Racers Kickoff title on Sunday.

Freshman Laura Plazas, Sophomore Dasha Kovalova, and Seniors Holly Harris, Kelsey Muther, and Tannya Roumimper separated themselves from the qualifying field on Saturday and did not look back on their way to victory, claiming the title 427-281.

Six team games and 16 baker games were completed before making a cut of 3 to the locally televised finals. Varsity and Junior Varsity teams competed in the event.

“I tried to be really intense on the TV show so it would narrow my focus,” Muther said.

Muther lead the girls Varsity team in qualifying, averaging 211.33 for 6 games. Heather Melvin averaged 213.40, which topped the Junior Varsity girls qualifying scores.

“We communicated really well and that made my moves much simpler,” Muther said.

Women’s Junior Varsity placed 1st, Men’s Varsity placed 5th, while Men’s Junior Varsity placed 2nd.

The Junior Varsity Women set the pace in qualifying with a score of 9030, 488 pins ahead of 2nd.

The Junior Varsity Men lead by 155 pins, with a score of 9843. They fell short in the last match to claim 2nd place.

“It was so much fun,” Matt Helmick, a player on this tournament’s Junior Varsity team said. “I didn't want to go home, I wanted to bowl another tournament.”

The Shocker bowling season continues in October when players compete in the Midstates tournament in Wichita, Kan.
