Shockers Prepared for Post Season Play
WICHITA, Kan. – As March rolls around, so do the Shockers into post-season as they travel to Fort Worth, Texas today, March 13, for the Sectionals Tournament from the 15th-16th at Cityview Lanes.
The sectional tournament format consists of all baker play. Teams bowl 64 games over 2 days and total pins determine standings. Each sectional sends the top teams to the National Tournament in Reno, Nev. this April.
Last year, the Lady Shocks blew the field away with a near 400 pin lead. Meanwhile, the men were busy shattering a 37 year streak of qualifying for nationals as they managed not to make it.
“We take it one shot at a time and the rest falls into place,” Senior Kelsey Muther said. “We aren't focused on the outcome. Although it’s a goal, we just bowl our best and see what happens.”
Midland, Newman and William Penn, a few of the top teams in the nation, are also competing at the Forth Worth sectional.
“We’ve been working hard since our most recent event.” Senior Devin Bidwell said. “This part of the season is what everyone has been waiting for. It’s hard not to be excited.”
Last year’s abrupt season end for the men was felt around the city of Wichita, but this year plans are different.
“We rarely focus on the past,” Head Coach Gordon Vadakin said. “If anything, last year serves as more momentum for our players. There’s a definite sense of urgency floating around these teams.”
After a dominating season by the women and a solid couple weeks of practice for the men, the Shockers have plenty of momentum pushing them forward.
