Shocker Alumni Earn Spots on 2014 Team USA

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State alumni Nathan Bohr (’99-’03) and Geoffrey Young (’08-’11) were the first two players named to the Team USA 2014 men’s team after their performances at the Summer Team USA Trials held at the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, Texas July 5 – July 7, 2013.

Young and Bohr earned their berths onto Team USA 2014 by finishing first and second, respectively, at the Summer Team Trials. It was a close finish as only three pins separated the two former Shockers.

This is Young’s first appearance on the adult team. He was a member of Junior Team USA in 2008 and 2009.

“It feels amazing to be on the adult team now. Ever since I made Junior Team USA it has been a dream of mine to jump up to the adult team. It feels good to win the tournament, but my main focus was just making Team USA,” said Young.

Bohr was a member of Junior Team USA from 2000-2002, and on the adult Team USA from 2008-2009.

“It is always a wonderful feeling to make this team. Team USA is something I strive for every year, and to make it again this year by bowling my way onto the team is a great feeling. I hadn't been able to bowl much leading up to Summer Team Trials, so I decided to keep everything as simple as possible and it worked out,” said Bohr.

Young averaged 227.87 over 15 games to win the tournament. It came down to the last ball, where he got just enough to edge Bohr out by three pins. Bohr averaged 227.67 for his 15 games.

“The last block I had nothing to lose, but everything to gain. I was just playing lanes and having fun. I was really nervous the last game, but I calmed down after four frames and went back to making great shots,” said Young.

The Summer Team USA trials consisted of 15 games over three patterns. At the end of the 15 games, the top two men and the top two women were awarded spots on Team USA 2014.

The rest of Team USA 2014 will be decided at Team USA Trials in January. There will be an additional ten men and ten women added to the team.
