National Team Match Game Titles Swept by Shocker Men and Women

WICHITA, Kan. – After both teams lead day one of qualifying, the men and women managed a Shocker sweep at the National Team Match Games last Saturday. Due to the high quantity of entering teams, the men bowled at St. Clair Lanes in Fairview Heights, Ill. while the women bowled at Bel-Air Bowl in Belleville, Ill.

National Team Match Games has an unorthodox format with a heavy importance placed on winning bonus points. Teams bowled 6 team games and 20 baker games in groups of four teams. 50 bonus pins were awarded for each team beaten while 25 bonus points were awarded for a tie. Total pins determined placing for the teams.

The men’s team had a steady event and, after some struggles near the end of Saturday, they finished 115 pins ahead of last year’s defending champions Robert Morris - Illinois.

“We’ve been putting in quite a bit of hard work,” Senior Devin Bidwell said. “We can't wait to hit the lanes hard next semester.”

The women created a 317 pin lead after the first day of competition, but after a difficult Saturday, they managed to win by only 17 pins. Webber International placed second.

Four Shockers bowled their way onto the All-Tournament team; two women and two men. On the men’s side, junior Francois Lavoie averaged 236.5 for the 6 team games, leading the way for the Shocker men and placing 2nd on the All-Tournament team. Graduate student and first year teammate Matt McNiel averaged 219.7, placing 6th on the All-Tournament team.

Sophomore Dasha Kovalova averaged 210.3 for the 6 team games, placing 3rd in the All-Tournament team standings while senior Tannya Roumimper averaged 202.5, placing 6th.

“This is a challenging event and sweeping it is great motivation,” Head Coach Gordon Vadakin said. “Our players have been working hard and it’s great to see their hard work in effect.”
