Shocker Men Claim Kegel Collegiate Classic Title
WICHITA, Kan. –– After last year’s runner-up finish, and a rocky start on Saturday, the Shocker Men claimed the Kegel Collegiate Classic title at Landmark Lanes in Peoria, Ill. last Sunday.
Teams bowled 6 qualifying games and 10 baker qualifying games before cutting to the
top 8 teams for an elimination round. After qualifying in 7th place for the eliminator
round, the Shockers battled through each game, eventually rising to the top at the
day’s end.
“These players had a very dominant performance in the eliminator round,” Head Coach
Gordon Vadakin said. “We’ve put in a lot of hard work and we’re not letting off the
gas.”
The semi-final’s last game proved intense as graduate student Matt McNiel struck
out in the tenth frame, moving the Shockers into the final by 1 pin.
“It was surreal,” McNiel said. “I was glad I could contribute to the success we were
having, but our team was still focused on the challenge of the final match.”
Although the men managed a pocket percentage of nearly 70% in qualifying, it was
not enough as they qualified 817 pins behind last year’s champions Robert Morris University.
Robert Morris University failed to advance through the first round of elimination
matches.
On the women’s side, the Lady Shockers led their 3rd straight tournament through
qualifying, eventually finishing 3rd after winning their first elimination match.
St. Ambrose University Women placed first and Wichita State senior Tannya Roumimper
led the women’s field in average with 221.16.
The Shockers head to Lawrence, Kan. for their next event, the Jayhawk Classic, on
Nov. 2.
