Lady Shox Successfully Defend Jayhawk Classic Title
WICHITA, Kan. – After small score gaps between teams on Saturday, the Lady Shockers
claimed top honors at the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence Kan., on Sunday, defending last
year’s title.
Shocker Bowling sent men’s and women’s varsity and junior varsity teams to the Jayhawk,
which consisted of 6 team games and 32 baker games. Varsity teams contained selected
players while junior varsity was composed of developmental players.
Although the varsity women put together a limited lead of 32 pins in the 6 team games,
the baker portion displayed the strength of WSU as they out averaged the field by
nearly 5 pins a game, claiming top honors by 150 pins.
“This tournament had a lot of positives,” Head Coach Gordon Vadakin said. “It showed
us some things we need to work on, and that’s a great thing to take away.”
Saturday started slow and, after a trying battle with the lane condition on Sunday,
the men’s varsity team placed 3rd in their division.
“It was frustrating,” Senior Nick Powers said. “We felt like we made great shots,
but we weren't matched up correctly. We didn't have a lot to work with.”
Sophomore Zach Rhoades averaged 220.5, leading the way for WSU and finishing second
in the all-events totals, 2 pins behind first. Freshman Lucas Vernon of the junior
varsity team finished 12th in all-event. He was the next highest WSU player in total
pins, averaging 200.6.
On the ladies’ side senior Allie Ijams averaged 207.5, finishing second in the all-events
portion of the tournament. Sophomore Dasha Kovalova placed 8th in all-events as the
next highest WSU player.
The Shockers are preparing for their next event, National Team Match Games, on Thanksgiving
weekend, Nov. 29 and 30.
