Shocker Alum Crushes Competition

WICHITA, Kan. – Seventeen-time PBA (Professional Bowlers Association) Regional titlist Nathan Bohr (’99-’03) topped the field of the New Mexico Open to win the $10,000 prize in Rio Rancho, NM last Sunday.

Bohr qualified second for the stepladder finals. “I wanted to make sure I had options going into the stepladder,” he said. “In qualifying I was able to play up the lane, but if that didn't work, I made sure I had something else to rely on.”

The event consisted of 9 qualifying games, 4 quarterfinal games, and 12 match play games on the way to the finals.

Theo Douthit, Bohr’s first opponent in the stepladder finals, posted games of 258 and 280 before falling to Bohr, 235-212. “Theo was throwing it great, putting it right where he wanted, and was locked in mentally,” Bohr said, “I knew it was going to be a tough match.”

Bohr’s final match, against fellow Shocker alum Geoffrey Young (’08-’12), who was named to Team USA 2014 alongside Bohr in June, was a familiar situation. “We had already gone head to head in the Team USA Trials and a BBT (Bower’s Bowling Tour) this summer,” Bohr said, “if you wanted to win a tournament this summer, you had to go through Geoffrey.”

The final match boasted little drama, with final scores of 188-183, Bohr over Young. “Knowing that whoever won was a Shocker was awesome,” Bohr said, “I’m just glad I got him one time, I was 0-2 against him.”

The New Mexico Open is held in the third week of August every year. This year, 2013, had the highest number of entries and greatest prize fund, with numbers still growing.

“This event is on par with every PBA Regional I’ve bowled,” Bohr said, “even some of the tour stops.”
