Shockers Sweep MidStates

WICHITA, Kan. – – This past weekend marked the 54th Annual MidStates tournament at Northrock Lanes (Men) and The Alley (Women) in Wichita, Kan. The Men’s and Women’s teams left the centers with their heads held high as they managed a Shocker sweep.

Each team bowled 9 qualifying games followed by 16 baker games, with champions determined by total pinfall. The Lady Shockers had no issue with high scores as they emerged victorious, 1,054 pins ahead of second place.

“This tournament was a lot of fun,” Freshman Caitlin Tam said. “It’s really cool to see what we’re working on in practice translate and be successful in tournaments.”

It was the second win in a row for the Lady Shockers and they’re glad to bring the trophy back home.

“This wasn't just for our team,” Senior Holly Harris said. “Coach Lewis was able to share some of the fun while on a short visit.”

Fewer pins separated the Men’s top teams as the tournament came down to the last few baker games. Lindenwood University was less than 50 pins from snapping the record 9-time win streak of Wichita State.

“We weren't really aware of the scores,” Senior Devin Bidwell said. “We made a lot of exceptional shots at the start of the last baker set and we just rode the wave.”

Three girls made the Women’s all-tournament team including Harris (219.5 average), Tannya Roumimper (Senior, 207.1 average), Leela Yahya (Sophomore, 216.4 average). Yahya bowled 8 of the 9 games.

Freshman Justin Zwaschka led average with 219.8 (6 games), followed by Senior Chris Colella with 212.3 and Bidwell, AJ Chapman (Sophomore), and Francois Lavoie (Junior), who all averaged 206.

The Shocker Men and Women leave this Friday for their third tournament of the season, the Kegel Collegiate Classic in Peoria, IL.
