Thanksgiving Weekend: After stuffing their bellies full of turkey at Gary and Carol Young’s house, the Shocker Bowlers are off the O’Fallon, Ill. for their first Tier I event of the season, National Team Match Games hosted by McKendree University.

History at St. Clair: Bowling takes place at the historic St. Clair bowl, which has been the host of the National Team Match Games for many years, as well as a number of PBA and PWBA events.

Shocker Sweeps: For the last three years as both the men and women have taken home the National Team Match Games titles and have had a lot of success at this event historically, winning the event more than 20 times in the tournament’s history.

Schedule & Format: Saturday begins with six traditional team games at 9:30 a.m. and Sunday consists of twenty Baker games beginning at 9:15 a.m. This tournament features a unique Barnhart match play format. Each match, which is one team game or a set of four Baker games, is bowled against three other teams in a group of four lanes. There are bonus pins (50 at this tournament) for each team beaten. For example, if the Shocker men beat all three teams they are bowling against, they are awarded 150 bonus pins. At the end of the tournament, the team with the most pins (bonus pins included), is declared the winner.

Traveling Shocks: Two teams of eight are representing Wichita State this weekend. Seniors Ashlyn Herzberg, Kristie López and Laura Plazas are joined by juniors Sydney Brummett and Hollyann Johansen and sophomores Estefania Cobo, Kayla Ovesny and Brooke Woodard are traveling for the Lady Shocks. Freshmen Kamron Doyle and Jerod Hromek make their Tier I debut alongside sophomores Brandon Biondo and Wesley Low, juniors Thomas Peters and Doug Wagner and seniors Mitch Hupé and Justin Zwaschka for the men.

Keeping Up With the Shocks: Follow the Shockers’ scores on their Facebook (/shockerbowling) and Twitter (@shockerbowling) for periodic score updates when they are available!

Shocks Nearing End of First Half: The Shockers compete in two more Tier I events after National Team Match Games in December. That will mark the halfway point of their season. This is the last tournament they compete in before fall semester finals.

Shocker Speak: Junior Thomas Peters and sophomore Brooke Woodard
Is it hard to spend the holidays away from your families?

  • BW: It is very difficult to spend the holidays away from home but I think of my teammates as my family. Wichita is my home away from home.
  • TP: It is really hard to spend the holidays away from my family. These are the times when I miss my family the most.

First semester is almost over. Is the season going as expected? What are your thoughts?

  • BW: I believe with each tournament we are learning more and more about our games. I love seeing each of us grow closer together as the year goes on. We are more determined than ever to work hard and be the best that we can be.
  • TP: First semester is coming to a close and our team is getting sharper each tournament. We have learned from our experiences and implemented them into our training. This is a pretty talented team but I believe our hard work will set us apart.
