Tier I Madness: ISBPA/Kegel Midwest Collegiate Classic is the fourth Tier I event in a row the Shockers have competed in.
Road to Baton Rouge: This is the first tournament of the second semester. The Shocks compete in two more regular season events after the ISBPA, then move on to post season in hopes of earning a spot in the Intercollegiate Team Championships, held in Baton Rouge, La. at the end of April.
Schedule & Format: This tournament is unique in that it is split into two separate squads. Wichita State will compete in the A squad on both Saturday and Sunday. Competition begins Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. with five, traditional team games. On Sunday, teams bowl 16 Baker games beginning at 7:30 a.m. again. There are no bonus pins, so the team with the highest pin-fall total will be declared the champion.
How to keep up: Follow the Shockers’ scores on their Facebook (/shockerbowling) and Twitter (@shockerbowling) for periodic score updates when they are available! Find tournament results on the Illinois State BPA Facebook page (Illinois State BPA) and on Twitter (@kegelcollegiate). The tournament is utilizing Facebook Live as well to feature one women’s pair and one men’s pair.
Shocker Travelers: Coach Lewis is making his return to coaching this weekend. Sydney Brummett, Ashlyn Herzberg, Hollyann Johansen, Kristie López, Kayla Ovesny, Laura Plazas, Kaitlyn Rudy and Brooke Woodard made the trip with him. Enzo Hernandez, Mitch Hupé, Wesley Low, Thomas Peters and Justin Zwaschka make up the men’s team, coached by Coach Vadakin this weekend.
Shocker Success: The Shocks stayed busy over the holiday break, competing in their countries National Team trials. Junior Sydney Brummett was selected to Team USA 2017 at Team USA Trials. Sophomore Brandon Biondo and soon-to-be Shocker Cortez Schenck bowled their way on to Junior Team USA 2017. Another soon-to-be Shocker, Briley Haugh, was also selected for Junior Team USA 2017. The three boys join Brummett and junior Sierra Kanemoto on Junior Team USA 2017, as the girls made the team over the summer at Junior Gold. Sophomore Estefania Cobo bowled her way onto the youth Team Puerto Rico 2017 over the break. Senior Laura Plazas also bowled her way on to youth Team Colombia 2017.
Next Up: The next two months are quite busy for the Shockers. They get a weekend off, then will compete in back-to-back events. McKendree Baker Challenge is Feb. 4-5 and the Hoosier Classic wraps up the regular season Feb. 11-12. The Shocks will take a small break before heading to the ITC Sectional tournament in March.
