Jama Challans
BENDER OF TWIGS INDUCTEE 2019
Jama Challans’ 25 years of service to Wichita State University have been marked by
a unique combination of knowledge, kindness, strength and compassion. She has held
various positions since she began her work in the Office of the Registrar but her
dedication to WSU and to student success has remained a constant. Jama’s spirit of
collaboration and teamwork have
shown through in her daily work within the Registrar’s office as well as her efforts
to serve the greater campus community on the USS Senate. She approaches each situation
with thoughtful consideration and care for the WSU community.
Jama is a true “people person,” always interested in the lives and success of others, especially students. A primary responsibility of her current position is working with tuition residency. This can be a highly emotional issue for students, given the cost of education today. Jama provides truly exceptional service to students in this area every day. She cares about their situation, provides helpful instruction and honest feedback, and makes the extra effort to help students in any way she can. She engages students in real conversations, encouraging them and seeking any possible options to benefit them. I am consistently impressed with her ability to communicate complex rules, and sometimes bad news, in a way that is direct yet compassionate. Jama grew up in Wichita and is a true Shocker. Her work brings her into regular conversations with prospective students and parents as well as former students and alums. I often hear her telling someone, “I’m so glad you chose WSU!” or “It’s so great that you’ll be on campus!” She asks questions to see how she can help beyond just what they called about…sharing her love of campus, reminiscing about what has happened and changed over the years, or encouraging them to come see what’s new. And her enthusiasm for Shocker Men’s Basketball is evident the moment someone walks into her workspace and sees the framed memorabilia around her!
Colleagues across campus know Jama as someone who loves animals, WSU and her husband (not in that order!). It has been my honor and pleasure to work with Jama directly for the past 10 years. She brings a positive and caring attitude to our office – as well as a spirit of service and fun. She has truly earned the designation as a Bender of Twigs! Congratulations, Jama!!
