Shirley Hazen

BENDER OF TWIGS INDUCTEE 2019

Shirley Hazen Shirley Hazen, RN, MN, CNOR, Coordinator for Nursing Online Education, is a Bender of Twigs Inductee.

Shirley emulates a passion for nursing and nursing education. She has served in the school of nursing for over 20 years and has taught countless future nurses.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Shirley the majority of her teaching career, both as her student and now as her colleague. Shirley’s passion lies with nurses whose academic progression is one of diploma, associate, baccalaureate, and graduate level. These nurses hold a special place in Shirley’s heart.

She is the coordinator for the RN to BSN program, she was on the forefront in developing the RN to BSN program at WSU. Shirley had a vision that this student population needed a different type of learning environment. Shirley understood these students were working adults who needed flexibility in scheduling. Shirley knew this student as she was this student. Shirley led online education in the school of nursing and the university. I do not believe many understand that her work eventually changed the face of online courses at WSU.

She has put in countless hours of service attending numerous recruitment events. She has chaired the Committee on Students for several years, this is often a very difficult and thankless role. When I reflect on what words I would use to describe Shirley, these come to my mind:

Diligent
Intuitive
Reliable
Resourceful
Unassuming
Sincere
Persevering
Passionate

I could list so many more. Shirley is simply amazing, she serves as a role model for myself and others.
